Neurofeedback/QEEG

NeuroFeedback and Neuro Therapy

In an effort to continue providing the latest cutting edge neuro therapies available, ACNC has added two (2) new features including Electroencephalography (EEG) and Hemoencephalography (HEG), in what we can Neurofeedback. This is also known as qEEG (quantitative Electroencephalography).

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive therapy that collects and analyzes the electrical signals in your brain and turns them into visual and auditory feedback so your brain can learn to heal on its own. To put it another way, HEG and EEG help the brain to start controlling its own frequencies and bodily functions which allows it to settle and heal more appropriately making day to day functions a breeze instead of a struggle.

How does neurofeedback work?

Your brainwaves are electrical impulses that are made when connecting and communicating between nerves in your brain. Your brainwaves communicate how you feel, how your brain and body are functioning, and how you respond to stress. Your brainwaves are also key in setting your mood, helping you sleep, helping you focus, and helping with motivation.

Neurofeedback has also been shown to help in conditions like post concussion syndrome, post stroke rehabilitation, migraines, ADHD, PTSD and anxiety.

In neurofeedback these signals are measured by small sensors placed on the scalp at specific locations. Once your initial frequencies are collected, your functional neurologist will develop a therapeutic plan for you to follow in order to help reestablish more normal frequencies in your brain, creating a more relaxed and efficient resting brain state.

The small sensors described above pickup the electrical signals made by your brain’s electrical activity, and these signals are amplified by the qEEG device. In short, these sensors act like microphones, picking up and amplifying your brainwaves. Your brainwaves will be collected and translated by the software and displayed as “feedback” via headphones and TV screen for your brain to physically hear and see, allowing you to subconsciously improve your own brainwaves.

What is a session like?

During your session, you will sit in a recliner and either listen to sounds, or play a video game using your brain to direct the action. The type of activity (listening or playing) will be selected for you based on your doctor’s evaluation of what type of activity will be best to address your brain’s underlying needs.

When your brainwaves have settled and reached the state that your doctor has identified as optimal for your health and functioning, you earn points and the game is completed. During this process, nothing is being “put into” your brain, the computer is only listening to your brain’s activity in the same way that a doctor might listen to your heart with a stethoscope. What you see on the screen is just the information being fed back to you (hence the name “neurofeedback”).

What is the typical time commitment for Neurofeedback?

Typically it is recommended patients perform on average 2 neurofeedback sessions each week and a minimum of 12 visits to see results and are often most effective in the 20-25 visits range. Creating new habits in the way your brain works takes time and studies suggest that results can be long lasting.
